Substance Abuse

Providing education and awareness of substance use and abuse is imperative to promoting the academic success, and health and well-being of our students. Teens and brain development research shows that the human brain is not fully developed until age 25. Research also demonstrates the effects of alcohol and other drugs on the developing brain. “Alcohol kills more teenagers than all other drugs combined. It is a factor in the three leading causes of death for 15-24 year olds: accidents, homicides and suicides.” . Our goal is to increase awareness regarding teen drug use, how drugs affect the developing brain and how to teach children refusal skills.

Substance Abuse Counselors/Abeyance Case Managers:

  • conduct substance abuse evaluations for students suspended for drug or alcohol related offenses and refer for intervention services.
  • provide consultation and intervention services for students who have not committed a drug or alcohol related offense but are at high-risk for drug and/or alcohol involvement.

Substance abuse referrals can come from school based administration, guidance counselors, teachers, parents, etc.
